I loved the first entry but stopped this one half way through. No FBI agent would partner with a reporter behind everyone's back, no one would go out without backup. No one who sends to be the ultimate Target of the serial killer would be allowed to take such an active role in the fieldBeyond that, the plot used a kind of Crypto cipher that was completely resistant to human cracking. It took the invention of the computer to defeat it, yet the agent's sister, who is"good with crossword puzzles" does it faster than the pros with computers at NSA. That's when I quit. I love this series so far! The suspense begins from the first chapter and builds throughout the novel. I enjoy learning more about working K-9's, in this case, several FBI agents and their K-9 partners. I also enjoy reading about codes and ciphers, even though I don't have the genius to figure them out as Meg's sister, Cara, can. The characters are complex and the mystery intriguing, especially as Meg is forced to choose between FBI standards and using an alternate code translator to find the abducted people before it is too late.Special Agent Meg Jennings and her partner, Hawk, go with the team to find a woman who was abducted and a note, addressed to Meg, was attached to the woman's service dog with a riddle of where to find her. It isn't a standard note; it is written in cipher and the location is not readily apparent as it makes references to a local historical place, and it is up to the FBI to translate the note and determine the location referred to before the team can look for the woman.The first woman is found already dead, the second barely clinging to life and in a coma. It is frustrating to Meg to not be able to locate those abducted on time, and she plans to work outside the box. At least, until her supervisor finds out. She doesn't have any way to predict who is kidnapped next except it is clear that she and her sister are in the sights of a madman. Both of the women found so far resemble Meg and her sister very closely.Meg is defined very well, and we learn more about her sister and family in this novel. Both are hard working and dedicated, both are intelligent young women. I enjoyed seeing the Washington Post investigative reporter, Clay, again, as well as Todd, the fireman she met during her last big case.Wow, what an intense novel! I enjoyed every minute of it, seeing how each person contributes to find the missing women, how human and K-9 work together, and just how detailed and complex the mystery is. I was very impressed with how Meg finally figures out who the bad guy is, as it is not someone part of her current daily life. In fact. she had little memory of him. I enjoyed how real historical sites are used as the team goes through a historically rich setting, primarily in Virginia, that helps bring to life this well-written novel. Finding the bad guy on time is essential, and the ending sends shockwaves in the Jennings family and the K-9 unit at the FBI. If one appreciates mysteries that include K-9 partners, complex characters, and are written well, I highly recommend it!I received a copy of this from the author on behalf of the publisher, and this is my honest review.
